About Edward Baugh

Edward Baugh is Professor Emeritus of English, UWI, Mona. He holds the degrees of BA Hons. (London: UCWI, 1957), MA (Queen’s University, Ontario, 1959), PhD (University of Manchester, 1964). He was awarded the Hon. D.Litt. by the UWI in 2010.

He has published three books of poetry: A Tale From the Rainforest (!988), It Was the Singing (2000) and Black Sand (2013). His books of biography and criticism are:

Derek Walcott: Memory as Vision (Longman, 1978); Derek Walcott (Cambridge Univ. Press, 2006), Frank Collymore: a Biography (Ian Randle, 2009), Derek Walcott (biography, UWI Press, 2017).

There are two compact discs of him reading his poetry: Edward Baugh: Poems from “It Was the Singing” (2002), and Edward Baugh Reading From His Poetry (2012).

His honours and awards include: Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence (1995); Commander of the Order of Distinction (1995);

Silver Musgrave Medal, Institute of Jamaica (1998); Pelican Award, UWI Guild of Graduates Jamaica Branch (1999); Cultural Icon Award (University of Technology, Jamaica); Gold Musgrave Medal, Institute of Jamaica (2012); Living Legacy Award, Caribbean Community of Retired Persons (2012);

Honorary International Member, American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2019); Bocas/Swanzy Award, Trinidad & Tobago (2021).
